Dr. Frye is not only a DVM, but also an expert herpetologist with a penchant for the exotic which leads to some memorable experiences. With Dr. Frye as witty commentator, the reader has a ringside seat as the doctor operates on an alligator in the men's room of a zoo, autopsies a whale, repairs a snail with a fractured shell, and is a dubious recipient of 90 dozen (1080!) "free" eggs that were donated to his veterinary hospital. A section of the book deals with excerpts from official stops to Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and the Indus River in West Pakistan where he assisted in the study of freshwater platinistid dolphins. In these lighthearted episodes, and in the few sobering ones too, the author comes across as energetic, articulate, and compassionate. Dr. Fredric Frye is someone whom every reader will enjoy getting to know. A sprinkling of masterful cartoons by fellow veterinarian Robert M. Miller enliven these tales.

$I...one of those truly rare books that will be read from cover to cover in one sitting. It is a humorously delightful glimpse into the lives of Fred and Brucye Frye and the many associated critters in their personal lives as well as those from his private practice as a veterinarian...We loved the book!$I -- Helen Benton & Steve Frantz, $INotes From Noah$I, (7), 1995.
