Varied views of McCarthyism are presented in
the hope that students will be less inclined to select the "right one" than to think about and discuss the dimensions of one of the most controversial phenomena of recent American history. The existence of complexity is one of the highest lessons of higher education. One hopes students will also learn something of the tension-filled period between the dropping of the atomic bombs and the launching of Sputnik, for in those years lie some valuable truths about the character and
