This is the era of the on-orbit serviceable satellite. With access to space via the Shuttle and the rapid development of technologies in space service, maintenance, and assembly operations, program managers now have a choice of orbit repair versus satellite replacement with ground launch of another vehicle. This book traces the history of orbital servicing; shows the status of servicing today; then presents information on mission operations, spacecraft design, servicing equipment and benefits/economics. The final chapter depicts a possible road map to future orbital servicing as a national capability. Four appendixes supplement the book's contents. A supplement updates this information covering servicing events from early 1993 to the present. The major emphasis in this supplement is on the space systems servicing tools and techniques developed and demonstrated on Shuttle missions. A special treatment is given to the strategy of rendezvous and docking maneuvers of the Shuttle with other orbiting spacecraft.

"$IWaltz appears to cover every conceivable technical and programmatic aspect of space servicing, from robotics to EVA, orbital transfers to space suits. The book is richly detailed, with graphics of past NASA missions and future U.S. programs. As such, it should be considered a must-read for those interested in the American space program and in space servicing in particular.$I"Raymond Hui,$ICanadian Space Agency$I "$I...it should prove a very worthwhile document for those with a professional interest in the field. It is, in essence, a book of guidelines on how to do on-orbit servicing -  a practitioner's handbook.$I" -- Mark Williamson, $IEarth Space Review$I, Vol. 3, No. 3, 1994. $I"As with the other books I have read in the Orbit Foundation series, this text is a sound technical primer."$I -- $IJournal of Practical Applications in Space$I, Summer 1994.
