The main purpose of this book is to provide the necessary background for physicists and engineers who are planning to enter the field of research into controlled thermonuclear reactions. The treatment is directed largely to experimentalists but sufficient theory is introduced to enable the reader to appreciate the principles underlying the observed phenomena. In general, the standard of the book is that of the first year graduate level in either physics or engineering. Apart from a basic knowledge of physics and math appropriate to this level, all that is needed for a satisfactory comprehension of most of the book's contents is an understanding of the elements of electromagnetism.
