| The purpose of this book is to
assist persons who lack experience in the design of buildings for resistance to earthquakes. The reader may be generally experienced in building design but lack specific experience with earthquakes, or may be without design experience of any kind. This book has been developed with both types of reader in mind. The study of the materials here will provide the reader with a general understanding of the problems of designing for earthquakes and a familiarity with the common techniques for
producing structures with resistance to lateral loads. Much of the material should be understandable to the average reader, however the discussions of building construction and structural behaviors are developed with the assumption that the reader has some background in these areas. The undergraduate course work in a collegiate program in architecture should be adequate in this regard. |
